CASAM Prizes for scholarly books and journal articles

CASAM administers three rotating annual prizes recognizing excellence in the study of the social and economic history of the ancient Mediterranean world (c. 3000 BCE – 800 CE). Each prize carries an award of €1,500 and is presented publicly at a CASAM event.

Nominations closed

Book Prize for Best Monograph

Honors an outstanding scholarly monograph of the past three years on the social and economic history of the ancient Mediterranean. Single- or co-authored works published by academic presses in English, French, German, or Italian are eligible; edited volumes are excluded.

Nominations for monographs published 1 January 2022 – 31 October 2025 closed on 1 December 2025.

Dissertation Book Prize

Recognizes an outstanding first book based on a doctoral dissertation, published within three years of the defense. Academic press publication is required; the prize is open to scholars of all nationalities.

Interdisciplinary Research Prize

Awards a peer-reviewed journal article that integrates historical, archaeological, and scientific approaches to the study of the Mediterranean — including archaeogenetics, climate history, and related fields. Co-authored submissions are welcome.

Nominations & submissions

Who may nominate

Nominations are accepted from authors, publishers, and colleagues.

Required materials

Full PDF of the nominated work (or a physical copy, if requested), a nomination letter of maximum two pages, and the author's CV.

Evaluation

A rotating committee of three senior scholars evaluates the nominated works.

Announcement

Winners are announced in the summer of the award year and celebrated at a public CASAM event.
